Alicia (Sumler) Irizarry

Obituary of Alicia Marie (Sumler) Irizarry

Alicia Marie (Sumler) Irizarry, 55, of Albuquerque, NM, fell asleep in death unexpectedly on Wednesday, November 16, 2022.

Alicia was born on December 23, 1966 at Waterbury Hospital in Waterbury, CT. She was the daughter of the late Georgia Sumler. She was a graduate of the Hairdressing & Cosmetology department at W. F. Kaynor Tech, class of 1984. She became the wife of Leonardo Irizarry on August 13, 1988. Alicia dedicated her life to Jehovah and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on September 25, 1982 and became a regular pioneer (full time servant) on September 1, 1985. Recently she had been a homemaker, but had worked many years as a school bus driver for Jonesboro Public Schools in Jonesboro, AR. She will be fondly remembered for her beautiful and contagious smile and her loving disposition.

As a dedicated full-time minister of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Alicia led what many would consider an adventurous life as she followed her husband, Leo. From Waterbury, they moved to Jonesboro, AR and later, to Leachville, AR to serve where the need was greater for evangelizers to teach the Bible in the Spanish-speaking community. Sixteen years later, they once again moved for the same reason to Diriomo, Granada, Nicaragua, where she and her husband served for 4 ½ years. After moving back to the states, Alicia served in Central Islip, NY and back in Waterbury, CT. Ten months ago she moved with her husband to her current residence in Albuquerque, NM. She also enjoyed traveling to International Conventions of Jehovah’s Witnesses in different parts of the world, including Costa Rica, Spain and Ecuador.

Alicia dedicated 35 years of her life to what she loved the most, teaching Bible-truths to others. She truly enjoyed having Bible-based discussion with anyone who would listen. In particular, she felt particularly privileged to be able to help her brother, Tim, and her sister, Triber learn about the Bible.

Alicia is survived by her husband of 34 years, Leonardo, and by her siblings, Triber (Theresa) Minnifield, of Waterbury, Timothy Sumler (Amada) of Bethel, CT and O’Neal Sumler Sr. also of Waterbury. She also is survived by her aunts and uncle, Mildred Hawk, William Wilson Echols of Waterbury, Gloria Jean Persons of Columbus, OH and by many nieces and nephews as well as a host of “spiritual children” composed of those she had helped to become Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Alicia was predeceased by her sister and brother, Stephanie and Lloyd Sumler as well as her mother, Georgia Sumler, her aunt, Christine White, and her uncles, Tom Minnifield, Henry, Larry and Harris Echols.
